I was sitting in front of the TV crying as CNN reported Pope John Paul II has died when I got home from work this morning. I was crying like I would've cried if someone very close to me has died. I cried because I think the world has just lost a great man. A man who always had his own convictions and stood by them. A man who reached out to people and made them feel God's presence and understand His word. He reached out to the younger generation because he knew the youth should be made aware that God is always there when one needs Him. People have described the late pontiff as a "champion of human freedom," "a tireless advocate of peace," and a "charismatic man." And all of that fit him perfectly. He was all those things and more. Thousands of pilgrims gathered in the Vatican when news of the Pope's poor health was announced a couple of days ago. And thousands more will arrive to pay their respects and bid him farewell. I just wish I could have had the means to go. This will play a major part of world history. I have never met the late pope up close because I was never able to join any World Youth Day event... but I didn't need to meet him in person to know that I love him and will always think of him as a great and amazing man who touched my life in more ways than one.
